PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPIES

As a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Dr Victoria Ross has been trained in multiple therapeutic methods. This helps her to work flexibly with clients and incorporate elements of different approaches that she believes will best meet your needs. The main evidence-based models she uses are listed below, although she also draws upon other models including somatic approaches. Eye Movement Desensitisation Therapy (EMDR)

Traumatic events whether in the recent or distant past have a way of showing up repeatedly in the present and getting in the way of life (even if we don’t realise it). Trauma can impact our minds, bodies and relationships. EMDR is a highly effective therapy designed to support people while processing trauma and the stuck emotions and sensations associated. EMDR has been shown to liberate and free people from the weight of past creating space to engage fully in the life that they wish to lead. I am trained in both standard protocol and attachment focussed EMDR.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Feeling a bit lost or lacking direction in life? Perhaps there’s a gap between the life you want and the life you have. This is a common feeling for many of us, especially given the fast paced achievement driven society we live in. ACT focuses on life fulfilment and helps to uncover and develop our core values and use these as motivation to make meaningful change in our lives.

Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT)

Do you find yourself beating yourself up time and time again? This is incredibly common among humans. However, if these patterns dominate we are likely to become vulnerable to depression & anxiety. CFT develops a deep understanding of our difficulties and uses tried and tested techniques to help alleviate distress including shame, guilt & self critical patterns whilst exploring alternative way of being using compassion.

Schema Therapy (ST)

ST is an active therapy involving thoughts, feelings, behaviours and body. ST supports you to identify and explore longstanding self-defeating patterns and ways of being. It explores the impact of early unmet emotional needs and how this can impact your way of relating to yourself and others as an adult. It also allows for exploration of coping modes and opportunity to review these alongside strengthening a wise adult perspective. This may involve processing difficult experiences.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Over time and through experience we develop patterns of thinking and patterns of behaviour. Sometimes these patterns are unhelpful and can inadvertently fuel psychological distress. CBT is a skills based therapy whereby you explore and develop tools and strategies to learn helpful patterns of thinking and behaving. This may involve challenging ways of thinking or making changes to what you do to make you feel better.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

The human mind has evolved to time travel. That is, we spend a significant chunk of time and attention based in the future or the past. It may be that you get caught up with future planning, anticipating, worrying or equally you may get stuck in the past where you loop on memories, ruminate or dwell. These habits of mind can hijack us from being in the present moment, right now. As a consequence, we miss out on a lot. Mindfulness provides training over time to develop a “mindful muscle” in our mind which can hook us back into the present moment, and thus create a richer experience. I have experiencing of delivering MBCT groups.

Online Therapy

Online psychological therapy has many unique advantages including the ability to have sessions in the comfort of your own home which can make it easier to fit sessions into a busy schedule. Additionally, a rapid growing evidence base indicates online therapy is as effective when compared to face to face therapy for many problem areas. It will be important for you to consider the pros and cons of online psychological therapy in your initial consultation.
